The tangelo probably originated in southeastern Asia over 3,500 years ago. Tangelos are, most likely, a result of insect cross pollination of the Mandarin orange and the pummelo (pummelo is the ancestor of the grapefruit).
Tangerines and tangelos are both rich, reddish-orange. The skin of the tangerine is thick, loose and more pebbly than the tangelo, whose skin is thin, adheres more to the inner fruit, and has only a slightly pebbled texture. Tangerines generally have one seed per segment while tangelos are mostly seedless.
Nicknamed “The Honeybell” because of its bell shape, the Minneola tangelo is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. Its large size and slightly elongated “neck” make it easy to recognize. The most popular of the tangelos, seedless Minneolas are brimming with sweetly tart juice.
